FONDA BAR AND FONDA CAFÉ: ACCESSIBLE AND INNOVATIVE
Fonda is an initiative of Amsterdam food design studio Oficina, famed for their creative take on food and design, and their popular sister canteen in Amsterdam West. At the Stedelijk, their concept features two spaces: Fonda Bar in the redesigned entrance area, which is open to everyone, and serves homemade baked goods, a selection of carefully curated coffees, Japanese teas, and refreshing drinks. Nestled in the heart of the museum, Fonda Café evokes the classic American luncheonette but with a modern twist: a semi-open kitchen, tables with an outdoor view, and a menu of classic flavors reimagined with a sophisticated touch. Simple, contemporary dishes prepared with seasonal ingredients and elegant garnishes designed to suit the tempo of a museum visit.

Our goal with Fonda,” say Oficina founders Zana Josipovic and Naiara Sabandar, “is to give the museum café culture a contemporary feel. With its inviting ambience, Fonda is a space where visitors can pause, relax, and enjoy flavors that are deliciously familiar yet innovative.

CAFÉ RESTAURANT SANDBERG: A PLAYFUL HANGOUT ON MUSEUMPLEIN
Café Sandberg will soon open its doors on the corner of the Stedelijk. Conceived by the entrepreneurs behind the successful Café Restaurant Metro in Amsterdam North and in partnership with Vermaat, this new eatery features a seasonal menu of locally grown, top quality produce. Highlighting the highest standards of craft and quality, the menu treats visitors to creative lunch and dinner options. The bread is produced in their own bakery. The daytime offerings feature Dutch-inspired classics like the broodje halfom and gevulde koeken. And in the evening, the Sandberg is a cozy hangout on Museumplein where guests can enjoy a lavish dinner menu and revel in the friendly vibe that makes this restaurant a special destination.

Café Sandberg is more than just a place to eat—it celebrates community and welcomes everyone, museum visitors and local residents, with open arms. Willem Sandberg, one-time Stedelijk director and graphic designer, was our inspiration for a playful, experimental space that encourages connection and inspiration,” say Xander Waller, Rients de Jong, Siem Feijen and Anne Foekema, the faces behind Café Restaurant Sandberg.

Madieke Been, Head of Creative & Concepts at Vermaat, on the collaboration with Metro: “In the creation of Sandberg, we brought out the best in each other. Sandberg is relevant, distinctive, and locally rooted. With Metro, we have found the perfect culinary match for the Stedelijk.”

Margot Gerené, business director of Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam: “The collaboration with our new hospitality partners mirrors the museum’s ambition to innovate and connect. These young Amsterdam entrepreneurs meet today’s dynamics with verve and creativity. By blending craftsmanship with innovation and using local produce they create spaces where visitors feel at home yet at the same time encounter surprises. We’re proud to collaborate with these hospitality partners who contribute to creating an inviting, inspiring museum experience. Thanks to the addition of our new culinary hotspots, the entrance area’s redevelopment is complete.
