Workshop Express Yourself
11 am – 5 pm, entrance hall, free admission
Show what you stand for and create your own button. This workshop is inspired by the shields and arms of General Idea. By using a poodle instead of the lion as their heraldic icon, they replaced a symbol of strength and masculinity with a symbol of style and queerness.
Exhibitions
Keith Haring — Amsterdam Notes
Longer than two trucks and unseen for almost three decades. Amsterdam Notes is one of the largest-ever museum pieces by artist and activist Keith Haring, and it hangs in our Hall of Honor, the IMC Gallery. Haring is as popular as ever thanks to his instantly recognizable, accessible style. His socially engaged work often tackles sociopolitical issues such as war, racism, drugs and AIDS, themes that resonate with many people today.
Felix de Rooy — Apocalypse
The Stedelijk presents five decades of artistry by multi-talented artist Felix de Rooy with film, theater and visual art in myriad forms from paintings and assemblages to (digital) collages and wall hangings. Far ahead of his time, De Rooy explored topics that remain relevant today, such as the continuing negative legacy of colonialism, everyday racism and the meaning of Afro-Caribbean and queer identities in art.
The collection
The Stedelijk presents the collection thematically, divided into three periods. Discover how gender, sexuality and queerness play a changing role in art over the years. Including works by: Anneke van der Veer, Marlow Moss, Nicolaas Warb, Andy Warhol, Louwrien Wijers, Hans Eijkelboom, Etel Adnan, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Michel Quarez.
