On 13 November 2025, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presents the premiere of Flaying of Marsyas, a new durational performance by artist Miles Greenberg. Known for his works that explore the body as a living sculpture, Greenberg examines endurance, stillness, and myth. The performance takes place throughout the museum’s entire opening hours in the IMC Gallery of Honor, and will be presented only once.

On 13 November 2025, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presents the premiere of Flaying of Marsyas, a new durational performance by artist Miles Greenberg. Known for his works that explore the body as a living sculpture, Greenberg examines endurance, stillness, and myth. The performance takes place throughout the museum’s entire opening hours in the IMC Gallery of Honor, and will be presented only once.

Titled Flaying of Marsyas, the piece references the mythological figure Marsyas—a satyr from Greek mythology who is flayed alive for his hubris after challenging Apollo to a music contest. This dramatic scene has been depicted in various works of art, most famously in a 16th-century painting by Titian.

By embodying and reinterpreting the figure of Marsyas, Greenberg inscribes himself into the classical art historical canon, using his body—painted matte black and covered in oil and pigment—as sculptural material. This newest durational portrait continues Greenberg’s ongoing investigation into mythic figures, following Sebastian, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, which was performed in Venice last year during the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Miles Greenberg (b. 1997, Montreal, Canada) is a New York-based performance artist and sculptor. His practice centers on durational performances that treat the body as sculptural form. These works are often presented live and later developed into video pieces or physical sculptures. Rigorous and ritualistic in methodology, Greenberg’s universe explores stillness, movement, and the decay of form.

At age seventeen, Greenberg left formal education to embark on four years of independent research on movement and architecture. He has studied under Édouard Lock, Robert Wilson, and Marina Abramović, and has participated in artist residencies at Fountainhead Arts (2023), Palais de Tokyo (2019), and The Watermill Center (2017 & 2018), among others.

He has exhibited and performed internationally at institutions including Museum Berggruen – Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin), the Louvre (Paris), Royal Theatre Carré (Amsterdam), The New Museum (New York), Pace Gallery (New York), and Southbank Centre (London). His work has also been featured in numerous international art surveys, including the Athens Biennial, Yokohama Triennale, Venice Biennale, and the Bangkok Art Biennale.
