Leaving a Legacy to the Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is a leading institution where everyone can discover and experience modern and contemporary art and design. At the Stedelijk, visitors are invited to be inspired and to view the world from new perspectives. A meaningful way to contribute to the museum’s future is by including the Stedelijk in your will. In doing so, you allow the museum to continue innovating and to keep contemporary art accessible for generations to come.
How you choose to support the Stedelijk Museum through your legacy is, of course, a deeply personal decision. Below, we have outlined several options for your consideration. We would be pleased to discuss your wishes and explore a tailored arrangement with you. Whether large or small, every contribution makes a lasting difference, now and in the future.
BEQUEST
A bequest is a provision in your will that allows you to leave a specific sum of money or an asset to the Stedelijk Museum.
(CO-)HEIR
By naming the museum as an heir in your will, the Stedelijk will inherit your estate alongside any co-heirs, such as children, relatives, friends, or other organizations.
NAMED FUND
If you wish to support a specific purpose or activity of the Stedelijk, you may establish a Named Fund in your will (starting from €100,000). You determine how your contribution will be used, for example for educational projects, special acquisitions, or innovative exhibitions. The Stedelijk Museum Fonds will manage the fund.
PAYING INHERITANCE TAX WITH ART DONATION TO THE STATE
Under certain conditions, your heirs may settle part of the Dutch inheritance tax with an artwork. The amount offset equals 120% of the appraised value of the artwork. The artwork will not become the property of the Stedelijk but will be registered with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and placed on loan to the museum. Not all artworks qualify; an independent committee reviews the applications. During your lifetime, you may submit an artwork for assessment to ensure your heirs can benefit from this arrangement. We are happy to assist you with this process.
TAX BENEFITS
The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Stedelijk Museum Fonds are designated as 'cultural public benefit organizations' (cultural ANBI) and are therefore exempt from gift and inheritance tax. This ensures that every euro of your legacy directly supports acquisitions, restorations, research, educational projects, and the realization of exhibitions.
Through art and design, we learn to better understand the present. That is especially vital today—for visitors who have known us for years and see the world changing ever faster, and for the new generations who will soon discover us and must find their way in a society that is constantly in motion.
