For its fifth edition, the Stedelijk Museum Video Club proudly presents a special program that delves into the early history of video as an artistic medium, in order to ask the question: What makes up the substance of relation, and how have performance and video-art taken up the aesthetics of relation as a key subject of art-making from the late 1960s and through until the present time? The program is guest curated by Vivian Ziherl and features a presentation of the 2016 film Wutharr: Saltwater Dreams by the Karrabing Film Collective.
The screening takes place in two parts. In the first part, Ziherl shares a body of video works that date from 1968 to 1974 and featuring renowned artists such as Jan Dibbets, Marinus Boezem, VALIE EXPORT, and Lawrence Weiner. Produced as forms of performance documentation, and often on film, these works share an abiding concern with diagramming forms of relation through space, time, and the body. This segment ends by shifting forward to the 1980s, and to video artist Gary Hill, who experimented by intertwining the cuts of video-editing together with the aurality of spoken poetry.
In the second part, Ziherl continues to reflect on the topic of relation in video art, introducing the work Wutharr: Saltwater Dreaming by the Karrabing Film Collective, an indigenous filmmaking group from Australia’s Top End. Karrabing’s video work invokes relation as a kind of substance that is at once material as well as inter-generational and narrative, infused with everyday habit and ancestral obligation. In Wutharr, Karrabing members debate the cause of a motor-boat breakdown in terms of overlapping relational worlds: a Christian world of prayer and virtue, a material world of rusty wiring and faraway supplies, and an ancestral world of territorial arrangements secured in sweat and through inter-generational obligation.
VIDEO CLUB
Video Club is a screening series highlighting the Stedelijk’s collection of time-based media. Through thematically organized selections of moving image works, Video Club presents films and videos spanning diverse eras, regions, and artistic movements. The rotating screening series puts time-based media into dialogue with other works on view in Stedelijk BASE, and draws attention to prominent issues and motifs that recur throughout the museum’s collection.
