In addition to a screening of the documentary Hildo Krop – Beeld van een kunstenaar (‘Hildo Krop – Image of an artist’), directed by Ricardo Alvarez and produced by Stichting Pelicula, this event will revolve around the question how enthusiasm for heritage, such as the many sculptures in public spaces by Hildo Krop, can be stimulated in the general public (and young people in particular).

The documentary Hildo Krop – Beeld van een kunstenaar is a biographical portrait of the sculptor and designer Hildo Krop, who was born in the Overijssel province and is an exponent of the Amsterdam School. In late 1912, after many wanderings, he definitively settled in Amsterdam. In 1956 he was officially appointed as city sculptor. Until his death in 1970 he realized over 400 sculptures for Amsterdam’s public space, on bridges, squares and buildings. It is remarkable how people both literally and figuratively brush past this impressive productivity. Why is this? And how can we increase the visibility and relevance of Hildo Krop’s work for Amsterdam (and the rest of the Netherlands), making more people aware of its significance?

The documentary by director Ricardo Alvarez and producer Stichting Pelicula addresses Hildo Krop as an artist and human, while illustrating the era in which he lived: a period of two world wars, the rise of socialism and subsequently communism. The film includes archive materials and interviews with experts on Krop as an artist, such as Frans van Burkom, Loek van Vlerken and Geert Buelens, as well as people who were close to Krop as a person, including his grandson Hildo Krop jr. and his former assistant Henk Oddens.

One the one hand, this program will address Krop as a designer and his relationship with the city of Amsterdam. On the other, the debate will focus on the question to which extent means such as films, apps and other digital media can be employed to increase enthusiasm for cultural heritage in public space among the general public, and young people in particular.
