Sonic Acts Academy is a festival at the intersection of innovative audio-visual and performative art and critical thinking, concerned with human-caused planetary transformations and driven by the need to rethink common futures. Taking place in Amsterdam from 21 to 23 February 2020, it offers three evenings of live cinema, experimental concerts and progressive club nights alongside a conference with cutting-edge international artistic voices at partnering institutions Paradiso, De Brakke Grond. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and OT301. As a condensed rendition of its bigger sister, the renowned Sonic Acts Festival, the Academy focusses on inspiring artistic research with a special emphasis on experimentation and innovation in the age of the Anthropocene.
The opening of Sonic Acts Academy 2020 features a wide variety of multidisciplinary interventions that are iterated throughout the evening, made up of audiovisual stagings, ritualistic performances and new installations, including a number of premieres and commissioned works. Exploring sound, kinetic and audiovisual art, the acts manipulate light, sound and movement while utilizing innovative performance tactics to investigate acoustic phenomena, amplification, spatialization, and the resonant properties of the museum.

New Installation by Philip Vermeulen
During Sonic Acts Academy, the sensorially powerful new work More Moiré² by Philip Vermeulen will be presented for the first time to the public. In a panoramic Ganzfeld environment, with no horizon or anchor point, he creates an immersive cinematic experience that puts the visitors' senses to the test. Inspired by the work of light artists such as Doug Wheeler and James Turrell, Vermeulen plays with human perception. In a virtual and abstract landscape of light, sound and moving moire patterns, he constructs new worlds and dissolves others. With this installation, Vermeulen investigates the tension between the experience of bodyless digitality and material physicality. More Moiré² forces a reset of the senses and stimulates an awareness of one's own material existence. The installation will be on view for a couple of days more after Sonic Acts, until Feb 27, 2020.
