On the occasion of the National History Month and as part of the public program of the exhibition Amsterdam, The Magic Center - Art and Counterculture 1967-1970 (7 July 2018 - 6 January 2019), the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam organizes a series of city walks that venture beyond the museum walls.

ART AT THE BARRICADES

From 1967 onwards, counter and underground culture as well as a sense of experimentation rise up from the margins and start to play a remarkably influential role in the cultural life of Amsterdam. At the end of the sixties, the city became a public platform for social action: the squatters movement’s protests, the student occupation of the Maagdenhuis university building and the feminist demonstrations of Dolle Mina, each of which have since gained historical status.

Artists took center stage outside of museum fortifications. Throughout the city, happenings took place and conceptual artworks were being made: Daniel Buren’s posters, meant as artistic interventions, adorned the street, and playful works, such as the Christmas tree of Wim T. Schippers, placed on the Leidseplein in the middle of the summer, offered unsuspecting passersby the opportunity to refresh their belief system.

The city walk visits these historical places, brought back to life by the guide’s stories. We also reflect on the legacy of this time: what have these actions brought us today?
