As early as 1945, two years before their arrival in Amsterdam, the Djayas were in touch with Stedelijk Museum director Willem Sandberg. This relationship culminated in the controversial exhibition Agoes Djaya en Otto Djaya in at the Stedelijk in 1947—and the donation of several works to the museum a few years later.
