In the early 1990s, Piet Hein Eek turned scrap wood into a popular material for furniture. This cabinet is the first model he produced. Eek occupied a unique position at the time, with his interest in ‘inferior’ materials, craftsmanship, imperfection and individuality – every piece is unique. These are now qualities that many designers aim to incorporate in their work. Eek’s furniture, made out of planks with different colours of paint, conquered first the Netherlands and then the rest of the world. He produces almost everything in his own workshops. As he had sufficient work and no desire to expand the company, for a long time he was unable to cater to an international clientele. However, since his range has become more standardised and there has been a little less emphasis on constantly creating new projects, Eek has gone on to make a name for himself internationally. This cabinet, which is still part of the range, can now be found all over the world.
