William Eggleston's carefully composed Huntsville, Alabama emphasizes the alienation and melancholy of a lonely man in an empty hotel room. Eggleston's images often monumentalize common scenes by making sizeable prints. This is combined with subject matter taken from the everyday. A man sitting on his hotel room bed becomes a meditation on loneliness. Eggleston is recognized for his use of colour in fine art photography. Fine art photography was until the 70's of the 20th century mainly printed in black-and-white while colour photography was the domain of commercial and amateur photographers. Here Eggleston shows how colour can be utilized to heighten emotion in a fine art photograph.
