In this wall hanging, Désirée Scholten enlarged the weaving technique – the structure of warp and weft – to such an extent that hardly any fabric remains. The hand-twisted threads are connected at only 24 points. Scholten started to investigate the possibilities of the loom during her studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in the early 1950s. Tutor Kitty van der Mijll Dekker encouraged her students to experiment with color, material and texture, in the spirit of the Bauhaus. Rather than designing for industry, Scholten chose to make autonomous textile works. In spite of the limitations of the loom, she was always able to invent new forms. She met her husband, Herman Scholten, at the academy. Together they rose to the top of the textile-art movement, both in the Netherlands and internationally. The Stedelijk Museum followed this movement very closely and owns a variety of wall hangings by both artists.
