Objet
Joan Miró
According to Joan Miró, ‘Objet’ presents his view of the human being, of man and woman, of the earth and nature, through ‘the improbable marriage of familiar forms’. Miró created this small relief using a combination of found, natural materials and industrial waste products. It is a composition of three wooden planks. Two pieces of cork have been attached with a large rusty nail to the piece of wood on the left, which has been painted blue. On the light-brown piece of wood in the centre are a scallop shell, an iron ring, a piece of cork and a colourful abstract painting. With this peculiar combination and fusion of objects, Miró has created a poetic image.
Although Miró did not consider himself a member of the Surrealist movement, its influence is clearly visible in this relief-like work. In the late 1920s, the Surrealists were striving to find a way to challenge traditional views of art. They combined visions from the subconscious with images, objects and materials that apparently had nothing in common.
