Johan van Loon
The Border Over is a hand-blown glass vase that shows how Van Loon is a master of colour and pattern. It was designed by him and executed by the Dutch artist Bernard Heesen. The vase is marked by randomness that manifests in the playful composition. Incorporated into the vase are large pieces of coloured glass as well as scores of air bubbles. These elements show movement and are combined in a painterly manner. Notable in this work are the handles. They are moulded hot glass that when formed can be as malleable as clay or fabric, the materials with which Van Loon has much experience. The handles have a texture which combined with their position around the vase suggests motion to the over-all impression. The title could refer to Van Loon dabbling in glass as opposed to working with his usual clay or fabric.
