This chair ‘Saturday’ was developed for study purposes, within the context of Ineke Hans’series ‘Seven Chairs in Seven Days’ (1993-1995). Like the other six chairs in the series, ‘Saturday’ is made of underlayment, an inexpensive variety of plywood. Ineke Hans devised this series in 1993 as a ‘rapid, intuitive project’, in her quest to find her own signature style. She wanted to move away from the influence of Bořek Šípek, with whom she worked for some time, and of the Arnhem Oktobergroep, which was based in the city where she first studied. Decoration and the more traditional artisanal side of design played an important role for these artists. The form of Saturday has the power of a pictogram. This piece is the only model in the series that exists in two versions. The study model in the Stedelijk Museum’s collection is slightly larger than the final version (120cm diameter). Hans did not actually complete this version of the chair until the Stedelijk expressed interest in acquiring the piece.
