Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Rietveld's first visual conception of the Zig-Zag Chair was completed in the early 1930s. With the Zig-Zag Chair, Rietveld continued his research on chairs that could be easily mass produced. The completed design was a chair without legs, resembling a bolt of lightening formed by four sheets of wood. The Zig-Zag chair is thus uninhibited by the supporting elements traditionally used in chairs. Each section of the chair is constructive and functional. The Zig-Zag chair was commercially produced by Metz & Co, Amsterdam, from the mid-1930s to the 1950s. This example belongs to a set of four constructed out of sturdy wood. Although this is a produced version, Rietveld went through a period of creating assorted prototypes out of various materials.
