Anne Imhof
YOUTH
Exhibition — Oct 1, 2022 until Jan 29, 2023
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Hartwig Art Foundation present: Anne Imhof – YOUTH.
Anne Imhof is the artistic voice of a new generation. This autumn, Imhof is invited to take over the Stedelijk's 1,100-square-metre lower-level gallery. Combining art, architecture, light, and a sound composed especially for the occasion, she will transform the space into a labyrinthine total installation. This is Imhof’s first solo in the Netherlands.
The artistic voice of a new generation
Anne Imhof is recognized as the artistic voice of a new generation that embraces the philosophy of Nihilism: the conviction that life is actually without meaning or purpose. She finds inspiration in a wealth of cultural history, from Greek mythology to underground culture.

WORLD PREMIÈRE OF NEW VIDEO-INSTALLATION
Disorienting dystopian total installation
The exhibition is an immersive and disorienting total installation, a dystopian labyrinth. YOUTH occupies the Stedelijk’s largest exhibition space, one of the biggest in the Netherlands.
Imhof also created a new video work, set in the desolate, snowy outskirts of Moscow, especially for this exhibition. This work will have its première at the Stedelijk as part of the total installation.
Anne Imhof took a risk, embracing emptiness in her new work. It pays off powerfully
International star of the contemporary art scene
Anne Imhof may not (yet) be a household name, but she’s an art world superstar. Imhof won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2017 for her work Faust. Her following exhibitions at Tate Modern and Palais de Tokyo (in 2021) were received enthusiastically by the media and the public alike. In 2021, Art Review’s ‘Power 100’ list ranked Anne Imhof among the top 5. YOUTH is Imhof’s first solo show in the Netherlands.

The exhibition Anne Imhof – YOUTH is a co-presentation of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Hartwig Art Foundation. Beatrix Ruf in collaboration with Katya Inozemtseva curated the exhibition for the first venue, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow. In response to the Russian war against Ukraine, the Garage Museum decided to suspend its exhibition programme with immediate effect. The preparations for Moscow are now the basis for the show in Amsterdam, which is curated by Vincent van Velsen in close collaboration with Rein Wolfs.
