On International Women’s Day we celebrate all that feminist movements around the world have fought for and achieved. We also look forward, collectively imagining what a more feminist future could look like. And what better way to envision and create that future than with the arts?

FESTIVAL TICKET + HOEVEEL VROUWELIJKE KUNSTENAARS? – AUDITORIUM – 12.30 PM (NL) Due to the capacity of the Auditorium, it is required to book a ticket for each desired program via the ticket link. Did you already buy a ticket and do you want to make a reservation for a 2nd or 3rd lecture, please select ‘I already have a ticket/voucher’ in the reservation system. General admission tickets (excl. Auditorium) are also available. It is only possible to make a reservation for the Gallery Talks though e-mail, please see below. We advise you to arrive well on time to collect your wristband at the Mama Cash desk. Please be present at the Auditorium 10 minutes before the start of the program. Admittance to the programs taking place in the Auditorium is only granted to those with a valid ticket. Please note a limited capacity for some of the areas other than the Auditorium. Attendance is possible on a first come first served basis.

Join us for the fifth edition of the Mama Cash Feminist Festival. On International Women’s Day feminist artists and activists take over the museum with a program filled with performances, artist talks and inspiring workshops.

Les invitamos a ser participe del movimiento feminista e artivista de Latinoamérica junto a las Reinas Chulas (Mexico), Aireana (Paraguay) y Mujeres Al Borde (Colombia).

HOEVEEL VROUWELIJKE KUNSTENAARS KUN JIJ NOEMEN?, Auditorium, 12.30pm, reservation required (DUTCH)

Rembrandt, Picasso en Warhol kennen we allemaal. Maar veel mensen vinden het lastig om vrouwelijke kunstenaars te noemen. Hoe komt dat? Waar is het werk van vrouwelijke makers van de afgelopen eeuwen gebleven en waarom krijgen we het zo weinig te zien? Emma Harjadi Herman (Mama Cash) gaat hierover in gesprek met kunsthistoricus en journalist Wieteke van Zeil.

FROM FEAR TO LOVE, Auditorium, 4pm, reservation required (ENGLISH) - sold out

Self-representation and storytelling are powerful tools for collective healing. Artists can help us respond to fear and trauma with beauty. Shilo Shiv Suleman, founder of the Fearless Collective, will share what the process behind creating the installation on the facade of the Stedelijk. The Sex Worker’s Opera will share their method of breaking through stigma and stereotypes with dance, music and laughter.

A conversation about the need for radical participation, reclamation, and dialogue in public space, in a world that offers less and less room for dissenting voices.

FEARLESS COLLECTIVE LIVE INSTALLATION, Entrance area, 11am – 6pm

Founded by artist Shilo Shiv Suleman in 2012, the Fearless Collective creates public art interventions with women and misrepresented communities across the world. This International Women’s Day they are bringing together protest signs and positive affirmations by feminists from India to Chile and from Serbia to The Netherlands in a site-specific installation on the facade of the Stedelijk. Watch as the installation takes shape and take the opportunity to add your own statement.

WORKSHOP BY ILLUSTRATOR HEDY TJIN, Audi Gallery, 11am – 6pm

In this family-friendly workshop you get to contribute to a large collective art work that celebrates women who inspire us. Learn from illustrator Hedy Tjin and create something beautiful together. You can also decorate your own tote bag with a drawing of your personal (s)hero.

ARTIST TALK: BERTIEN VAN MANEN, Audi Gallery, 1pm

While her work has been collected by museums like the Stedelijk, the MoMA and Metropolitan Museum Tokyo for decades, Beyond the Image: Bertien van Manen & Friends is the first major survey of her oeuvre in the world. This Artist Talk will be a conversation with Bertien van Manen about the purpose of documenting and the position of  documentary photographers in relation to their subjects.

GALLERY TALKS, Entrance area, reservation required

When we look at the Stedelijk collection from a feminist perspective, what do we see? Find out with a guided tour by Cathelijne Blok (founder The Titty Mag), Rachel Rumai (writer, poet, performer), Sekai Makoni (workshop facilitator and artist) or Aynouk Tan (fashion philosopher).

Q4: QUANTIFIED, Entrance area

This New Way Vogue performance, choreographed by Sarada Sarita, investigates what it means to break through, transcend, and create new patterns, both societal and personal. New Way Vogue is characterised by graceful walks, poses, geometric shapes, lines and extreme stretch. The performance will be repeated a few times throughout the day.

FEMINIST OPEN MIC, Studio A, 3pm – 5.30pm

Grab the microphone and show your artistic talent or share your story. Be quick and sign up for the last open spots on the day itself. The Feminist Open Mic is moderated by Jolien Spigt.

For the safety of visitors and staff, entry to some areas of the museum will be provided on a first come, first served basis.

The Mama Cash Feminist Festival also has programs in Radio Radio (Amsterdam), WORM (Rotterdam) and BAK, basis voor actuele kunst (Utrecht) on 7 and 8 March. The Mama Cash Feminist Festival is supported by the Dutch Postcode Lottery.
