Henri Matisse’s (1869 – 1954) paintings, drawings, sculptures and cutouts are among the most admired works of art of the twentieth century. The exhibition The Oasis of Matisse offers an offbeat perspective on the oeuvre of this world-famous artist, interweaving his work with the Stedelijk Museum’s collection.

This exhibition catalog captures the striking pairings of Matisse’s paintings and drawings with iconic works by artists such as Marc Chagall, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. It also

devotes particular attention to Matisse’s later works, including one of the most beloved works in the Stedelijk collection: the monumental cutout The Parakeet and the Mermaid.
