EuroPride 2016
Queer video screenings
A selection of works from the collection

This selection from the Stedelijk’s time-based arts collection is presented within the context of the cultural programming for Amsterdam Gay Pride/EuroPride 2016. The works introduce different ways of looking and a culture that values the notion of difference: different voices, changing identities and hybrid subjects.

In Lessen (2002), Albert van Westing portrays kite surfers’ attempts to get onto their boards. Van Westing’s perspective is that of an observer, witnessing their repetitive failures. Yet the video remains a partial depiction, as it offers only a glimpse of the action.

In Videos Within Capitalism (1996), Tariq Alvi goes beyond observing as he ‘cruises’ public space and appears to actively seek (sexual) tension between his subjects and himself. This leads to a climactic segment of pornographic material.

David Wojnarowicz’s ITSOFOMO (In the Shadow of Forward Motion) (1989/2004), in contrast, delivers a powerfully inward gaze. The artist looks into the bodily experience of HIV/AIDS. Supported by the music by composer Ben Neill, Wojnarowicz compellingly narrates his personal struggle with the disease. He later exteriorizes the dangers of hate speech, religious extremism and gun laws in the US of the late 1980s – a warning that curiously resonates with the recent homophobic mass shooting in Orlando.
