On friday night 22 September from 8 to 11 pm the festive reopening of the new, refurbished entrance area is taking place! Our restyled entrance area will truly serve as a meeting point, complete with a comfortable seating area and coffee bar.

This evening, we also present two new exhibitions: Carlos Motta - The Crossing, and I Am a Native Foreigner, which features works from the Stedelijk Museum collection that explore aspects of migration.

It is the opening of the cultural season!

CARLOS MOTTA

In The Crossing, a two-part installation with videos and objects commissioned by the Stedelijk, Motta (Bogotá, 1978) presents video portraits of eleven LHBTQI refugees in which they talk about their experiences before, during and after their exodus from their homeland. Their gripping accounts tell of the impossibilities of living in a culture permeated with homo- and transgender phobia, where extreme repression and social pressure make it impossible for people to be open about their sexuality or gender identity.

"I AM A NATIVE FOREIGNER"

The collection presentation “I Am a Native Foreigner” considers the effects of migration on artists both past and present, and reveals how they dealt with, and depicted, the impact of displacement. The title of the exhibition is taken from a statement made by the Mexican artist Ulises Carrión (1941-1989), who settled in Amsterdam in the 1970s.

Directeur Beatrix Ruf: “I believe it’s important that, at the Stedelijk Museum, you can see how art addresses the issue of migration, and how art can bring us face to face with our preconceptions.”

This evening, we are also delighted to present our new sponsor, illy, which has installed a coffee bar in the entrance area. To celebrate the inauguration of our re-designed entrance area, illy will be serving complimentary coffee to all our guests.
